About Shoreline

Zachary Marks

Zachary Marks has been with Shoreline for about 5 years and has worked in almost every position. He regularly is an instructor for our Windsurfing and Sailing Camps. He is also certified in CPR and First Aid. When he’s not here, he may be found mountain biking, rollerblading, or fabricating his next invention. He aspires to continue his education and become a mechanical engineer.

Brent Tan

Brent Tan has been an all around sailing instructor and good guy here
at Shoreline for about 3 years. He is a certified instructor through U.S. Sailing Association and currently certified in CPR and First Aid. Brent is
an avid sailboat racer who prefers Lasers and J24s. To help nourish his pursuits, he has been a student at the Cordon Bleu cooking school. He is a sushi lover. Brent is a practicing physician out at Stanford Hospital in his spare time.

Martyn Griffiths

Martyn Griffiths has been teaching windsurfing for so long that he can’t remember (we think it’s 5 years). He’s a certified instructor through the Windsurfing Instructors of America, a PADI certified rescue diver, and is current in CPR and First Aid. Martyn enjoys the satisfaction that comes with teaching people a new skill that they will grow to enjoy. It’s evident in the smiles he receives from his most recent windsurfing students. When not teaching, Martyn is concerned about the environment and may be applying his computer programming skills to the marine sciences. He has had exciting work through the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

Jim Airo

Jim Airo may be the Pied Piper of Shoreline. He loves working with kids and that’s why he’s here. Of course, the natural setting of our lake is another obvious reason. Jim is in his second year as Camp Director for Camp Shoreline. He has been a local elementary school teacher for the past 8 years and is currently a 5th & 6th grade teacher for the 2004-5 academic year. When not teaching, Jim spends time with his beautiful wife and three daughters. He enjoys baseball, basketball, and sushi.

Christina Ferrari

Christina Ferrari, our president, proprietor, and lioness of Shoreline Aquatic Center. What more can we say? She’s the “Real Deal” and everyone’s hero. She has really nurtured Shoreline to what it is today. She is also the mighty-might behind the event planning. Big or small, she handles them all. With degrees in international business and coursework from the California Culinary Academy, she will make any event and teambuilding sizzle and dazzle. In her free time, she is a well cultured world traveler.

Jennifer Ferrari

Fun and family brings Jennifer Ferrari to the Shoreline Events Team as a marketing and events coordinator. She has had plenty of experience orchestrating live musical events and mixers for one of the top media moguls in Colorado, the state of her alma mater. She is sure to make your event memorable. She really enjoys snowboarding and horseback riding when she’s not at Shoreline. She also has an affinity for Italian and Mexican cuisine.

Fei Chatila

Fei Chatila, our head kayaking instructor, is a superb teacher with a refreshing technique with which everybody can identify. She enjoys the tranquil yet exhilarating experience of kayaking and looks forward to sharing it with you. She has been certified as an instructor through the U.C. Berkeley and is also current in CPR and First Aid. She enjoys Shoreline because it is so close to home, offers diverse wildlife, and there are many activities to keep the family occupied while she’s teaching kayaking. After a good kayak session, she likes to warm up to a bowl of soup or the Mozzarella Sandwich from the Lakeside Café. Besides kayaking, Fei enjoys backpacking, hiking, traveling, meeting new people, and exploring new cultures. You may catch a glimpse of Fei as she gives her twin two year old boys their first experiences in kayaking.

Kyle Northend

Kyle Northend loves engines. So perhaps it is not surprising that his job at Shoreline has extended to maintenance work, fixing engines, or, as he puts it, “I work all round, wherever they need me.” During the summer months Kyle also doubles as a sailing instructor for the kids’ camps. He is both CPR and first aid certified. In his role as a sailing instructor, he comes from a background in the Sea Scouts, and has been sailing for six years, now an adult leader with the Sea Scouts. Kyle has sailed in several regattas with the Sea Scouts, and, while participating in a two person boat in the 2004 William I. Koch Cup in Massachusetts, won the prestigious Dawn Riley Spirit Award. Kyle is currently attending San Jose City College. He intends to go to the Californian Maritime Academy, where he aims to get a degree in maritime transportation. His ultimate goal: “I hope to own and operate my own tug boat.”

Ben Jacobs

Aspiring professional airline pilot Ben Jacobs has been teaching kids’ camps at Shoreline for three years. As a camp instructor most of his time is spent teaching sailing, but he is also a certified windsurfing instructor, and holds current certifications in both First Aid and CPR. Aside from the “awesome tan” he gets while working at Shoreline, Ben loves working outdoors in the sun and water with the kids. He asserts, “I strive to give personal attention to my students, be energetic, encouraging, and as fun as possible.” When not working at Camp Shoreline, Ben studies at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, teaches sailing privately, dabbles in some amateur magic, reads avidly, plays video games, works with computers, and enjoys a good movie.

Bruce Kroener

Bruce Kroener has been a windsurfing instructor at Shoreline Aquatic Center for 7 years and holds his WIA (windsurfer instructor association) certification. In his other guise, Bruce has been working as a union electrician in Silicon Valley for 26 years. Bruce keeps coming back to Shoreline. He loves the environment, meeting other sailors, the great rigging area, and the fact that it is a safe place to learn to sail. A sailor from the tender age of 7, Bruce’s first love is now windsurfing. He has been windsurfing for 16 years. Bruce maintains, “there’s nothing quite as exhilarating as windsurfing.” As a windsurfing instructor, what sets Bruce apart is how excited he gets when teaching. Bruce admits, “I get a thrill when I see students coming back (from windsurfing for the first time).” But for Bruce the “ultimate reward” is when students of his later become windsurfing instructors themselves.

Rommel Barrientos

Rommel Barrientos has been on and about sailboats for the last 35 years. As well as being a Red Cross certified instructor of CPR and first aid, Rommel holds current teacher certification with US Sailing. Rommel has been a popular sailing instructor at Shoreline for the past year. Rommel’s teaching method is straightforward, but extremely effective. He says, “I keep it simple – where is the wind, know your point of sail, and trim your sail.” In the past Rommel has raced catamarans in 30 knot winds. These days he finds it more difficult to find a partner, who, as he puts it, “is willing to push the envelope.” At present Rommel is in his last quarter at De Anza Community College, studying classical literature and philosophy. In the future he would like to be a trial attorney. For now he is content to spend his days outdoors, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sailing.

Eleanor Pearson

It was her love of sailing and boats that first brought Eleanor Pearson to Shoreline. Before she knew it, a regular hobby of sailing on the weekends, led to a part-time job working at Shoreline in the rental office. Eleanor has been working at Shoreline Aquatic Center since September 2005, making her a relatively new member of staff. With a degree in journalism and a certificate in floristry behind her, Eleanor’s job at Shoreline has been all about multi-tasking. Says Eleanor, “On a typical day at work, I could be rigging up a sailboat, dealing with the public, canvassing advertisers for the newspaper, writing articles, or researching menu development for catered functions. I couldn’t really ask for more in a part-time job. I especially like working on or near the water.” If it is an Australian twang you detect in Eleanor’s accent, you would be quite accurate. Eleanor has been living in the States with her American husband since October 2003
